Antoine Lienhardt says he makes his wines as if he were making a Grand Cru, and this is his Nuits-Saint-Georges: a blend of two hillside climats south of the village, Les Charmois and Les Poisets, up where the vineyards meet the forest line. He took over the family vines in Comblanchien in 2011, converted to organics and now farms biodynamically, ploughing with a horse and pruning severely to hold yields around 40 hl/ha. Fruit is hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard, fully destemmed, then fermented in closed tank for 10 to 15 days on native yeasts with no sulfur added during vinification, before eight to twelve months in barrel with no more than 10% new oak. 2023 was an abundant, warm year in the Cote de Nuits that had growers green-harvesting to rein in yields and picking early in the day through a hot start to September. The result has more perfume and less brawn than the Nuits-Saint-Georges reputation would lead you to expect.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Antoine Lienhardt is shattering long-held beliefs about Burgundian terroir and winemaking.

He’s biodynamically farmed his family’s old-vine holdings in and around Comblanchien for 10 years, and in that time he has proved a point about the local terroir. Wines from Combalchien can only be labelled "Côte de Nuits Villages," but Antoine believes they have Premier Cru — and even Grand Cru — potential. The village, just past Nuits-Saint-Georges, has vineyards with perfect mid-slope positions…just like Burgundy’s Grand Crus.

From the beginning, Antoine treated his parcels as though they were Grand Cru. He keeps yields down and sorts meticulously to eliminate any sub-optimal fruit. That sort of attention to detail is out of the ordinary in a place that can't command Grand Cru prices. But it pays off in beautiful fruit that expresses the subtle variations of Lienhardt's terroir.

Antoine is also that rarest of things: a natural winemaker in Burgundy. Few others want to take on the risk, but Antoine is convinced that manipulations will compromise his wines' ability to reflect their terroir. Except for a little bit of sulfur at bottling, he works without interventions. The wines are vibrant and alive, with the terroir expressiveness of true Burgundy.

Antoine’s two theses are proven true: Comblanchien is great terroir, and natural winemaking is a great way to reveal that terroir. Don't be fooled by the sheer pleasure they afford: these are wines with the balance and the substance to age beautifully. Antoine suggests 10+ years, even for the Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Who are we to argue?
