The Farmer Family vineyard, formerly Heinstein Vineyard and Compagni-Portis Vineyard, is a true relic of old California. Located about one mile from the Sonoma town plaza, this old, unirrigated field blend was planted in 1954 to a mixed variety of white grapes including: Sylvaner, Riesling, Green Hungarian, and Gewurtztraminer. The vines are planted on the original estate of the early California wine pioneer Agoston Haraszthy. Dating to the early 1850s, this is one of the oldest pieces of dirt to be planted to wine grapes in California outside of the missions. The soils are dominated by fluffy white volcanic ash that has washed down over the centuries from the nearby flanks of Mount Veeder. Every year the wine has a unique personality based on the varied degrees of ripening within the block. The interplanted varieties are harvested together and the picking bins are filled with a kaleidoscopic array of berry colors, shapes and sizes. The resulting wines are unique, vibrantly fresh and aromatic with an underlying backbone of brisk acidity and soil-driven minerality.

Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts, along with a small group of fellow trailblazers, have led the way in helping redefine what California wine can be and taste like. Their wines have a deep sense of terroir, refined and elegant structure and are deliciously complex. In 2001, when they began this endeavor, finding local wines with these qualities was tough. But along with their aforementioned colleagues, they started a small revolution and these days you can walk into many a wine shop and find an example of what's been coined, โ€œThe New California Wineโ€.
But, perhaps a better sobriquet for Duncan and Nathan's wines might be The New California Classic. Their wines are a nod to the great California wines made in the decades before Parkerization. They have shown that California is capable of producing wines that shine in their youth and will gracefully age to glorious full maturity. Arnot Roberts has become synonymous with New California wine in a lot of ways. Since their founding in 2001, they've spent a lot of time scouring the state for some of the best previously unknown vineyard sites, doing so with a respect for the environment that is nothing short of remarkable. They work with all their growers to encourage organic farming and minimize their environmental impact: these are wines that are not only delicious, but that you can feel good about drinking.
Like all great winemakers, the cornerstone of Duncan and Nathanโ€™s approach starts in the vineyard. They are dedicated to finding super distinct and unique sites from Mendocino in the North to the Santa Cruz Mountains South of the Bay Area. Their enormous respect for Californiaโ€™s terroir have led them to some of the stateโ€™s most celebrated vineyards. But they aren't just about the famous sites; they know the state is full of amazing and still unheralded regions and they've done an incredible job of hunting out great vines in very special spots.

"A unique wine from an equally unique vineyard (known as The Farmer Family vineyard or Compagni-Portis): six acres planted back in 1954 with this wild white field blend, featuring aromatic varietals from Gewรผrztraminer, Grรผner Veltliner, Riesling, Trousseau Gris, to other whites like Chardonnay, along with approximately 6% of other unidentified varietals - a historic dry-farmed site in Sonoma. This vintage of Arnot Roberts' Old Vine White is roughly 85% Riesling, with the addition of a bit of everything else. You get a vibrant floral and fruity wine with notes of jasmine, honey, and passion fruit juices, complemented by a citrusy grapefruit and candied ginger finish. It's an easy, light, and quite delicious 'white table' wine. Only 3 barrels were produced."
