Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Riserva Inferno Sesto Canto 2016

Ar.Pe.Pe. has done the waiting for you here: the 2016 Sesto Canto spent 70 days macerating in big 50-hectoliter wooden vats, 39 months in cask and then three more years in bottle before release. It's pure Chiavennasca (Valtellina's local name for Nebbiolo) from Inferno, a subzone of the Valtellina valley. The vineyard faces south at 450 meters in Poggiridenti. The name may be the best story in Valtellina. Arturo Pelizzatti Perego raced the Inferno Circuit many times in the Valtellina Cup Rally, and the vineyard sits on the road's third curve. So the family named the wine after Dante's Sixth Canto, which is set in the third circle of Hell, where the gluttons are punished (fair warning for anyone planning a long dinner around it). Only 500 cases of the 2016 were made by this cult house, so it won't be around for long. Take the producer's advice: give it an hour of air and use your biggest Nebbiolo glass.

"The 2016 Valtellina Superiore Inferno Riserva Sesto Canto is powerful, deep and explosive. Red Nebbiolo fruit, blood orange, mint and white pepper all soar from the glass The 2016 offers a beguiling mix of fruit and structure, all supported by vertical energy and tons of drive. It's one of the highlights in this range from Ar.Pe.Pe." —Antonio Galloni

"There are lovely accents of eucalyptus and lavender to the rich fruit and spice character in this silky red, which delivers a generous beam of mulled cherry flavors. Finely balanced and long on the palate. A beauty."

More about Ar.Pe.Pe.

ARPEPE is short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, the founder of the estate. Sadly Arturo passed 15 years ago, but his children have continued the work he started. Emanuele and Isabella have expanded the winery and this allows them the luxury of patience. They can age the wines for years in tanks, concrete vats and large neutral oak barrels until they are ready to bottle, and they can age them even longer in bottle until they are ready to sell and drink.

The vineyard work is laborious and almost entirely by hand due to the steepness of the slope. They eschew the use of herbicides and pesticides and essentially farm the same way as their ancestors did.
