Aubry Champagne 1er Cru Brut NV

Champagne permits seven grape varieties and almost nobody bothers with more than three; Aubry grows all seven. The family works a small handful of sites in the western Petite Montagne, an area unusual for its fossil-bearing limestone, which is where the electric acidity in these wines comes from — that, and the nearly forgotten Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau (the local name for Pinot Gris) they kept planted alongside Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Brothers Philippe and Pierre Aubry farm premier cru vineyards around Jouy-les-Reims and blend this Brut from six of the seven, in near-equal parts Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with a perpetual reserve begun in 1998 supplying depth. It is one of the most distinctive corners of Champagne available at a genuinely everyday price, and one of the region's best arguments that diversity, not uniformity, is the whole point.

Wine Enthusiast

"This is a full, ripe Champagne with a lightly mineral texture. It comes from the northern end of the Montagne de Reims, giving dominance to Pinot Noir. It is a food-style of Champagne, with its dry texture and almond and citric flavors." —Roger Voss

More about Aubry

Brothers Pierre and Phillippe run this unique estate focusing on the nearly lost indigenous varietals of Champagne. The yields here are kept low for intensely concentrated wines, usually fermented in barrel with well knit structure.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Jambon de Bayonne with cornichons, roast chicken with tarragon, a wild mushroom tart, or a wedge of Brie de Meaux.

Tasting Profile

Red apple, white peach and raspberry, while time on the lees brings toast and a wet-chalk savor, plus a faint spice from the rarer varieties in the blend. Fine, persistent bubbles and mouthwatering acidity, with a low enough dosage to leave the finish dry and clean.
