This is Chianti Classico from a place with a real claim to the name: one of the earliest known written mentions of "Chianti" turns up in a late-12th-century document in Badia a Coltibuono's own archives. Vallombrosan monks founded the abbey in 1051, and the Stucchi-Prinetti family still runs it. They descend from Michele Giuntini, the Florentine banker who bought it in 1846. The 2022 is certified organic and made from 90% Sangiovese, taken from the estate's own massal selection, with a little of the traditional supporting grapes. The vines grow on clay and limestone on south-facing slopes in Gaiole and Castelnuovo Berardenga, at 260 to 370 meters. The winemaking is old-school: native yeasts, three weeks on the skins, then 12 months in French and Austrian oak casks of various sizes, so the oak sits behind the fruit and the place. Spring rain and downy mildew cut yields in 2022, but a sunny late August and September brought the grapes to full ripeness. This is the kind of Chianti Classico we reach for when we want the real thing without any fuss: an everyday bottle with nearly a thousand years of history behind it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pappardelle with wild boar or duck ragù, penne all'arrabbiata, grilled Tuscan sausages with white beans, bistecca alla fiorentina, roast pork loin with rosemary, and medium-aged pecorino toscano. Serve slightly cool, around 61-64°F.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Chianti Classico Sangiovese: sour cherry, red plum and dried herbs, with hints of violet and earthy, savoury spice. Medium-bodied, with bright, mouthwatering acidity and firm but fine tannins; ageing in casks rather than small barriques keeps the oak in the background. It typically finishes dry and savoury, made for pasta, grilled meats and aged cheese.
