What is this wine?
Beaumont Family Wines Jackals River Pinotage 2022 is a classic, refined example of South Africa’s signature red variety from the cool-climate Bot River region in Walker Bay. The Beaumont family, pioneers of Bot River winemaking, have championed Pinotage for decades, crafting it with a focus on elegance and balance rather than power. Grapes are hand-harvested from older bush vines, fermented traditionally with gentle extraction, and aged in a combination of French oak barrels (about 20% new) for 18 months.

Why get this wine?
Beaumont’s Jackals River Pinotage is one of the most consistently respected examples of the grape — a wine that showcases finesse, freshness, and regional character over weight or sweetness. The 2022 vintage, from a cooler and balanced growing season, highlights Pinotage’s potential for grace and complexity, with pure fruit and fine-grained tannins.

What does this wine taste like?
Vibrant and medium-bodied, with aromas of ripe cherry, plum, and redcurrant layered with hints of spice, cedar, and earth. The palate is silky and fresh, finishing long and savory.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now through 2030. Serve slightly cool with grilled lamb, game, or spicy South African dishes. Decant for 30 minutes to let the fruit and spice unfold.

"This wine enjoys a three-decade tradition at Beaumont Family Wines. The 2022 Bot River Jackals River Pinotage follows the house style, which aims for a focused, mid-weight style. It is fermented in open concrete vats with two punch-downs per day. The idea is not to overwork the cap. A small portion of new oak is used over 14 months of aging. The wine shows bright fruit, plum and a distant note of wild rose. You might also recognize something succulent like meat on the grill, but all the aromas are held back with balanced restraint. It finishes with a hint of tart fruit. The wine is made with old vines planted in 1974 with some fruit from plantings made in 2018. This is a 16,290-bottle release. " -Monica Larner
