Bedrock Sonoma Valley Old Vine Zinfandel 2023

$2799

Bedrock Wine Co. is Morgan Twain-Peterson's life's work, and old-vine Zinfandel is its beating heart. This Sonoma Valley bottling draws on the gnarled, head-trained, often century-old vines that Bedrock has fought to preserve, many of them field blends with a scattering of other old varieties mixed in. The result is Zinfandel with energy and lift rather than heat and sweetness, brambly and spicy and built around real freshness. This is what old-vine California is supposed to taste like.

"The 2023 Zinfandel Old Vine is a very pretty wine. Floral, spice-inflected and lifted, the 2023 is such a classy offering. In this vintage, the Old Vine Zinfandel is incredibly varietal. Even so, it is sensual, silky and wonderfully inviting. The blend is built on a core of fruit from Sodini, Bedrock, Teldeschi and Evangelho, with smaller bits from several other properties in the portfolio. Most of the wine is aged in neutral vessels, with a well-judged touch of spice from some new oak that adds flair. What an absolute delight." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Zinfandel Old Vine comes from vines averaging 80 years old, and Bedrock farms the fruit for about 75% of this blend. It has expressive aromas of wild berries, licorice, earth and spice. The medium-bodied palate is rounded and smooth with a balance of concentrated, mineral-driven fruit and vibrant acidity, and it has a long, nuanced finish." —Erin Brooks

"Sleek and juicy, with fan-friendly cherry, raspberry, toasty spice and briar accents that glide on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2033."

More about Bedrock

Embracing the heritage of ancient vineyards and ensuring they continue to prosper is the most noble duty of today's California vigneron. Bedrock Wine Co. has used this concept as the foundation of their winery, farming vineyards themselves and continuing to support other growers who work with historic sites. There's no winery in the state that sees such a diverse range of revered vineyards like the guys at Bedrock. The story of place is undoubtedly where it all starts, but the quality of wines from this duo represent the very best that California old vines have to offer.

The duo behind Bedrock are Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell. Morgan grew up working alongside his father, Joel Peterson in the vineyard and cellars of the family winery, Ravenswood. A child prodigy, he began making his own wine, Vino Bambino, at age five and, starting with the 1986 vintage, it was poured at top restaurants in New York City. In 2007, Morgan founded Bedrock Wine Co. using a converted chicken coop on the outskirts of Sonoma.

Morgan met Chris in NYC at the small boutique wine shop they worked at on the Upper East Side. A strong friendship grew, and after a decade selling fine wine in NYC and many harvests with Morgan he received a call from his buddy telling him it was time the two made wine together.

The vineyards they use are not the only “old-school” thing about Bedrock: whole cluster fermentation, native yeast and minimal intervention are harnessed to highlight the complexity of these ancient sites. The resulting wines are powerful and concentrated yet balanced and elegant; delicious young but capable of developing over the decades.
