Bereche et Fils Champagne 1er Cru Ludes Extra Brut Le Cran 2018

$16999

Precision and pleasure: that's the Bereche promise, and Le Cran is their flagship single-vintage cuvee. Raphael Bereche is one of Champagne's hardest-working, most curious growers, obsessing over every step from farming to dosage, and his wines are quietly legendary among the trade. Le Cran is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from two old-vine plots in the family's home village of Ludes, a Premier Cru on the Montagne de Reims. Bereche blocks malolactic fermentation, which keeps the wine taut and mineral, and this extra brut is bone-dry and built for the cellar.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 Extra-Brut Le Cran is another compelling wine in this range from the Bérêche family. Apple tart, apricot, mint, yellow flowers, vanillin and a kiss of French oak lend an exotic flair. Chardonnay speaks with an assertive voice; it was picked at 11.5% potential alcohol and comprises 60% of the blend as opposed to the more typical 50%. Pinot Noir is just behind in terms of ripeness. This needs a bit of time to absorb all of its oak. Dosage is 3.85 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

More about Bereche et Fils

The great grower Champagnes that excite Champagne lovers these days tend to fall into a certain category, with low dosage, low sulphur, and a decidedly edgy vibe. We love them. But one grower has managed to gain worldwide fame—not to mention a cult-like obsession here in the U.S.—without going in that direction: Bérêche & Fils.

On paper, at least, everything about Bérêche is classical. This starts with history, as this is a domaine that was founded just before the U.S. Civil War. It continues with land. They don't farm some obscure corner of Champagne, but in its historic heart, with plots scattered around the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne.

Traditional and classical, perhaps, and yet something sets it apart: sheer excellence. Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche's intense focus on high quality farming and precise work in the cellar is exactly the sort of hard work that was too often missing from the pre-grower Grand Marques. And it results in wines that people—no matter how geeky their Champagne tastes—just love.
