This is Germany's most-poured draft beer, and it shows why a properly made Pilsner never goes out of style. Some of its hops come from just down the road: Bitburger's Siegelhopfen ("seal hops") are grown in Holsthum, in the Südeifel nature park, by hop farmer Andreas Dick and his family. They're blended with Hallertau hops from Bavaria, and the brewery calls them the soul of its beer. The other secret is patience. The yeast gets a longer, classic fermentation at low temperatures, and the brewery credits that for the beer's harmonious taste. It's brewed under the Reinheitsgebot (the German Beer Purity Law) from water, malted barley, hops and hop extract. The brewery is still family-run, seven generations after Johann Peter Wallenborn opened a small rural brewery in Bitburg in 1817. At 4.8%, it's a 12-pack worth keeping in the fridge for whatever comes up. When the moment arrives, the house slogan tells you how to order: "Bitte ein Bit" ("One Bit, please").

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled bratwurst with spicy mustard, soft pretzels with Obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread), pork schnitzel with lemon, fish and chips, buffalo wings, or a spicy Thai larb.

Tasting Profile

Bright golden yellow with a lasting white head of very fine bubbles. The nose is clean and lightly fruity, with grassy, spicy hop aromas. It's lightly sparkling, with a touch of malty sweetness and a clear hop bitterness (33 IBU) that fades smoothly on the finish. 4.8% alcohol.
