Bodegas Campillo Rioja Crianza 1995

A Crianza is Rioja's youngest oak-aged category, meant to be drunk within a few years — so a 1995 Crianza that has instead spent three decades in a cellar is an unusual thing, and at this age it drinks with the mellow, tertiary character you would normally have to buy a Gran Reserva to get. Nineteen ninety-five was one of the rare vintages the Consejo Regulador graded Excelente, which is the reason a wine from the bottom rung of the aging ladder has held up at all. Campillo is the Rioja Alavesa estate of the Martínez Zabala family, whose landmark château-style winery outside Laguardia, sitting in the middle of its own vineyard, opened in 1990 — this bottle comes from the winery's very first years. The house works almost entirely with Tempranillo and ages in American oak, and the combination of that oak, the grape's naturally high acidity and a cool, still bodega is what lets traditional Rioja go this distance. It comes from a private collection rather than from the bodega's own stocks. Stand it upright for a day and decant gently; drink it the same evening.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Braised oxtail, roast suckling pig, grilled lamb, or a plate of Idiazábal and jamón. Rich, slow-cooked, unfussy food is the target.

Tasting Profile

Dried cherry and fig with leather, tobacco, dried herbs and the sweet vanilla-coconut signature of American oak. Medium-bodied, tannins fully softened, still-lively acidity, and a savory, moderately long finish.
