Bordón is the wine that made Franco-Españolas famous, and this is a special-harvest bottling of it from 1970, a very good Rioja vintage now more than five decades in the bottle. The house itself is a piece of Rioja history: founded in Logroño in 1890 by Frédéric Anglade Saurat of the Bordeaux firm Anglade together with Spanish partners, at the moment when phylloxera had wrecked French vineyards and sent French winemakers south across the Pyrenees looking for grapes and a place to work. That Bordeaux inheritance shaped a classical, long-aged style, and the bodega's cellars sit right on the bank of the Ebro in the middle of the city, cool and stable enough to have made bottles like this possible. Traditional Rioja ages this way for structural reasons — years in American oak, Tempranillo's high acidity, and constant cellar temperature — rather than by luck. This came out of a private collection, so treat it accordingly: upright for a day or two, then a careful decant off the sediment, and drink it over dinner rather than saving half the bottle.
