Bodegas Palacio Rioja Glorioso 1970

A Rioja with more than half a century in the bottle, and the kind of mellow, sweet-savory character that no young wine can fake. Glorioso is the long-running red of Bodegas Palacio, founded in 1894 in Laguardia, the walled hill town at the center of Rioja Alavesa. Wines like this survive because of how they were made: high-acid Tempranillo, years spent in American oak casks, and then more years resting quietly in a cool underground bodega before anyone thought about selling them. This bottle came out of a private collection rather than the winery, so treat it gently — stand it upright for a day or two, then decant carefully off the sediment. Old Rioja rewards patience but doesn't demand it: pour it and let it open in the glass over the course of a meal.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, jamón ibérico, aged Manchego, or a mushroom and short-rib rice. Keep the seasoning gentle so the wine's delicacy isn't buried.

Tasting Profile

Expect a pale, bricked color and aromas of dried cherry, leather, tobacco leaf and the faded coconut-vanilla sweetness that old American oak leaves behind. The body is light to medium, the tannins fully resolved, and it's the acidity that keeps everything upright. Savory and drying on the finish rather than fruity.
