1964 is widely considered one of the greatest Rioja vintages of the twentieth century, and this is a bottle of it — more than sixty years old and still standing. Bodegas Palacio was founded in Laguardia, in Rioja Alavesa, in 1894 and launched Glorioso in 1917; the words Cosecha Especial on the label mark a selection the bodega set aside from the harvest. What keeps wines like this alive is the old Rioja method: Tempranillo picked with real acidity, long years in American oak casks, and then long years more in cool cellars underground. Documentation on a wine this old is thin, and we won't invent any — what we can tell you is that it comes from a private collection and that bottles of this age are individual. Stand it upright for two days, decant slowly off a fine sediment, and drink it the same evening.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Simple, savory food that stays out of the way: roast lamb, a plate of jamón and aged sheep's-milk cheese, or slow-cooked oxtail. Avoid anything heavily spiced or acidic.

Tasting Profile

A wine at the delicate end of its life: dried red fruit, orange peel, leather, walnut and old sandalwood. Light-bodied, with tannin long since dissolved and a fine acid line holding it together. The finish is savory and lingering, and the wine changes noticeably in the glass over an hour.
