Bodegas Roda Rioja Reserva Roda 2021

$5799

Bodegas Roda built its reputation in Haro's storied Barrio de la Estacion on a simple idea: source only old-vine Tempranillo (35 years and up), farm meticulously, and let the wine speak. The Reserva 'Roda' is the middle tier of the house — between entry-level Sela and the flagship Roda I — and the 2021 leans into Roda's red-fruit signature: bright raspberry and red plum, fine-grained tannins, and the spice that comes from twelve-plus months in mostly French oak. Modern Rioja at its most polished, drinking beautifully right now but built to age.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Roda is 89% Tempranillo, 6% Garnacha and 5% Graciano from old vines, aged 14 months in French oak (half new). Garnet in hue, it delivers black fruit, plum, mint and light cedar aromas. On the palate, it’s smooth and juicy with fine tannins. The slightly warm, ripe tone reflects the year, but this remains bright and expressive."

"The 2021 Roda, the wine that was once called Roda II, with more red fruit than black and a more approachable profile, was produced with a blend of Tempranillo with 6% Garnacha and 5% Graciano in this cooler and very complete year. It has notes of aromatic herbs, wild berries and flowers, quite spicy and with a medium-bodied palate, contained ripeness and 14% alcohol, and the 2021 polished and round tannins make it very harmonious and long. The élevage was in 50/50 new and second-use French barriques and lasted 14 months. The oak is neatly integrated, and the wine shows young and clean. 149,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023."
