An Evening of Korean Craft with Hana Makgeolli & BOJAGI

On Thursday, September 10 from 5p–7p, please join us in the Cellar Room for an evening at the intersection of heritage fermentation and traditional Korean craft. 

Alice Jun of Hana Makgeolli and San Francisco designer and artist Judy Kim of BOJAGI join us in the Cellar Room for a two-part evening: a guided tasting through Hana's artisanal rice wines, followed by a talk and live demonstration on the ancient art of Korean fabric wrapping.

Alice opens the night with the wines themselves — the history of makgeolli, the traditional brewing process, and how a drink made from nothing but rice, nuruk, and water produces such range in the glass. It's a category most guests will be meeting for the first time, and there's no better introduction than from the person making it.

Judy follows with bojagi: a zero-waste artform built on intentionality, reusability, and the idea that how a gift is given matters as much as the gift itself. Her work carries that tradition into a contemporary register — sleek, spare, and made for the way people actually give things today. Her pieces have been featured in The Korea Times, commissioned for clients including the Mayor of San Francisco, and selected for exhibition at the Asian Art Museum this fall. She'll walk through the history and cultural meaning of the practice, then demonstrate step by step how to wrap a wine bottle in fabric.

Guests will also get first access to Volcanic Black, BOJAGI's limited-edition fall capsule, drawn from the deep, moody textures of volcanic landscape.

The timing is deliberate. Chuseok — the Korean harvest festival, sometimes called Korean Thanksgiving — falls on September 25 this year, two weeks after the event. Rice wine has long been part of the table, and a bottle wrapped by hand in bojagi is about as complete a Chuseok gift as exists: the drink, the craft, and the gesture all in one.
