Cakebread Cellars Napa Valley Chardonnay 2023

The Napa Chardonnay that built the house style — a deliberately restrained one, where richness comes from texture rather than from oak or buttery malolactic. Roughly 40% is estate fruit and the backbone is Carneros, the coolest corner of the valley, where Pacific fog rolls in over Haire loam soils and slows ripening enough to hold the acidity; warmer sites like Oak Knoll fill in the middle. It's fermented in a mix of French oak barrels and stainless steel, with only 13% taken through malolactic fermentation, then aged eight months on the lees with regular stirring in 32% new French oak. 2023 brought heavy early rains and a long, drawn-out growing season with warm afternoons and cool nights, which is about ideal for Chardonnay. Cakebread has been family-owned in Rutherford since 1973, and this bottling is the reason a lot of people know the name.

"Fresh pear, apple and citrus notes are elegant on a light and sleek frame, with elements of citrus zest and ginger lingering on the finish."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dungeness crab, roast chicken, seared halibut with lemon butter, or a creamy corn risotto. Also good with mild soft cheeses and summer vegetables.

Tasting Profile

Ripe pear, melon, apple and lemon curd, with chamomile and a touch of lightly toasted brioche. Medium-bodied and rounded from the lees work, but with crisp citrus acidity running through it. Clean, moderately long finish; oak is a hint rather than a flavor.
