Can Sumoi Vino Espumoso Extra Brut Muntanya 2024

$2799

Muntanya means mountain in Catalan, and this is Can Sumoi's traditional-method sparkler from the heights of the Massis del Montmell. Pepe Raventos and Francesc Escala farm the estate organically and biodynamically at 600 meters, well above the heat of the Penedes valley floor. The blend is roughly half Macabeu and half Xarel-lo, fermented spontaneously, aged about ten months on the lees in bottle, and finished with no additions of any kind. The result has Cava's structural backbone but none of its industrial polish: lightly creamy, briskly mineral, and dry to the bone. Call it Cava's wilder, more interesting cousin.

"The 2024 Muntanya, a 50-50 blend of Macabeu and Xarel·lo from Montmell Mountains in Penedès, Catalunya, was aged about 10 months on the lees. Expressive with subtle yeasty notes, it offers gentle pastry tones, lime and pear. Dry, moderately fresh and chalky, it delivers an attractive malic edge and a textured finish." —Joaquín Hidalgo

More about Can Sumoi

Catalunya's sparkling wine industry, best known for Cava, has undergone a whirlwind of development and drama in the last two decades. There is no better master of the craft to help us navigate this fascinating region than Pepe Raventós. Raventós i Blanc has one of the longest documented winegrowing traditions in the world—the estate, now 44 biodynamically farmed acres, has belonged to the Raventós family since 1497. In this masterclass, Pepe will guide us to a deeper understanding of his benchmark sparkling wines and his home region.

Pepe has been harvesting grapes in San Sadurní in Catalunya’s Penedès Valley since he was a small boy, and running his family company full-time since 2001. Trained in oenology at the Complutense University of Madrid, he’s worked in Saint Émilion, Pouilly Fumé (with the late Didier Dagueneau), Saint Aubin (with Olivier Lamy), the Nahe (with Harald Hexamer), and Alsace (with Philippe Blanc). His wines, largely traditional-method sparklers, have become an international reference point for both quality and vision by bringing animals, plants and people together into a single, respectful agricultural whole.

In 2012, Pepe famously decided to leave the Cava appellation that his forebears had been instrumental in founding, creating in the process the hyper-specific Conca del Riu Anoia designation for his wines. Most recently, he’s been recuperating the old, high-altitude, forest-encircled vineyards of Can Sumoi, a 17th-century mountaintop property from which he makes minimal-additive wines under their own label.
