Cappellano Barolo Pie Rupestris 2021

$27999

Cappellano is one of Barolo's most fiercely traditional and beloved estates, shaped by the late Teobaldo Cappellano, who spent his life defending the integrity of the wine, and now run by his son Augusto. "Pie Rupestris" comes from the tiny, prized Gabutti cru in Serralunga d'Alba, planted on grafted American rootstock (rupestris) in the 1940s. This is full-throttle Serralunga Nebbiolo: austere, authoritative, built for the very long haul. Fermented at length and aged in big traditional botti, then bottled unfiltered and released around four years after harvest. These wines are made in small quantities and rarely sit still. Decant generously, or better, cellar it for a decade-plus.

More about Cappellano

Serralunga is extreme. No village in Barolo produces wines of greater structure and longevity. We understand that has to do with its soils, as no village in Barolo has a greater concentration of limestone.

When dealing with such a lion of a terroir, it must be tempting to find a whip that will tame the beast. For a winemaker, that could be barriques, or short macerations, or roto-fermenters. Those are the short-cuts.

Augusto Cappellano, like his father Teobaldo before him, does not take those short cuts. Partly, that's because he is just fine with structure and longevity. That is the natural product of Serralunga's special terroir, after all. Partly, it's because Augusto's extremely high-quality farming (the family has only four hectares so they can apply their natural farming methods assiduously to each and every vine) ensures that the grapes' tannins ripen properly, avoiding any of the harsh, bitter qualities that for years many assumed were also "natural."

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Since the pernicious vine disease flavescenza dorata decimated Cappellano’s small holdings in the nearby town of Novello a few vintages back, their three hectares in the cru Gabutti are all that remain. And, of those three hectares, the Nebbiolo planted on the lower third of the slope is used entirely for their fabled Barolo Chinato—meaning that this Barolo comprises only the heart of their holding, from vines planted in the late 1940s. “Pie Rupestris” combines stony power, firm structure, and pure, soaring fruit in a manner that creates wonderful tension, yet the overall impression is one of seamless harmony. [NOTE: Cappellano excludes the word “Gabutti” from the label in protest of the expansion of the cru’s boundaries some years back.]
