Caprili Brunello di Montalcino Riserva AdAlberto 2016

$15999

AdAlberto is Caprili's flagship Riserva, named for Alberto Bartolommei — the great-grandfather of current winemaker Giacomo — and made only in the best vintages from the estate's Madre vineyard, planted in 1965. The site sits at around 365 meters in Tavernelle, the cooler southwestern sector of Montalcino, on mixed limestone and silica soils that lend Sangiovese both power and lift. 2016 is one of the modern era's great Brunello vintages, and this Riserva shows it: deep, layered, and structured, with dark cherry, leather, dried rose, and tobacco resolving into a long, savory finish. A bottle for the cellar, and for special occasions.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Ad Alberto is sultry and dark, captivating the senses with its mix of crushed stone, wild herbs, red currants, dried roses and ashen earth. The textures here are like pure silk, seamless and polished, with potent black fruits and savory spices that penetrate deeply as fine tannins mount under an air of tobacco and dark inner florals. It leaves the palate reeling with a combination of residual acids, tart berries and sour citrus, all held firm in youthful poise. The 2016 Riserva Ad Alberto is absolutely stunning, but it will require a number of years in the cellar to reveal all of its charms." —Eric Guido

"The Caprili 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva AdAlberto (with only 5,000 bottles produced) is a standout wine, showing intensity, smooth integration and lots of varietal personality. "Classic" is probably the best word to apply here, and I use that descriptor with care. The tannins are expertly integrated, and even at this young age, the wine shows no rough edges. It is polished and integrated to the end. Fruit comes from a single hectare of vines with rocky clay soils that lock in important moisture during the summer months." —Monica Larner

"Enticing, earthy aromas of forest floor, blue flower, leather and wild berry come to the forefront on this classically crafted Brunello. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the savory palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and a hint of mocha framed in taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it seamlessly balanced." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Caprili

Caprili is a traditionalist Brunello estate that began back when there were only about 20 producers in Montalcino, which is now home to over 200. Being one of the first is not just a badge of honor – it also means they’ve had much better (and more affordable) access to the region’s best terroir.

The situation of Caprili’s estate is prime indeed: high up a hill in the village of Tavernelle, cozily nestled between Case Basse (home of the late, legendary Gianfranco Soldera, Montalcino’s greatest winemaker) – and Angelo Gaja’s Pieve Santa Restituta. Theirs are truly great holdings, and the young Giacomo Bartolommei, who runs the estate, treats them as such.

Farming is organic, and indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation. The wine is aged in large, neutral oak barrels for a minimum of 3 years. This combination of great terroir and minimal-but-thoughtful winemaking have been the basis of Caprili’s fresh, chiseled Brunellos, which are certainly cellar-worthy, yet also so pure and pretty you can drink them young.
