Chateau Biac Cadillac Cotes de Bordeaux 2016

$4999

Biac sits on one of the highest hills in Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, looking down on the Garonne, and the Lebanese-British Asseily family have spent two decades quietly turning a derelict property into one of the appellation's standouts. The terroir runs from sandy clay into gravel, so the family adjusts the blend each vintage - some years Cab-led, some Merlot-led - depending on what the season delivers. 2016 was a benchmark Bordeaux vintage with ripe fruit and firm structure; this is the kind of wine that punches well above its appellation's reputation.

"Delicate nose of grilled meats, pepper, and earth. Intense creamy palate of black fruit, oak spice, and perfumed violet. Rich yet refined and luxurious, with finely sculpted tannins."

More about Chateau Biac

There’s great terroir scattered all over Bordeaux. It's not just in the famous (and expensive) appellations. Look around and you'll find limestone slopes outside Saint-Émilion, gravel beds beyond the Médoc. Even Pétrus' famous blue clay, “smectite” (ok, maybe not the best name) can be found far from Pomerol’s borders.

But all of those soils in one place, laid out in an orderly way like some picture perfect terroir textbook? Impossible!

In Château Biac we actually found just such a place. It's one of the most beautiful and well-situated properties We've ever laid eyes on: a gently sloping amphitheater descending to the Garonne river, with vines organized into tidy plots according to soil-type. Gravel on one side, clay and limestone on the other, and even pockets of smectite visible in the cliff face.
