Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse Pauillac 2009

$11499

From the great 2009 vintage and now in its prime: a Pauillac Fifth Growth from the cooler coastal section of the appellation. Grand-Puy Ducasse (not to be confused with Grand-Puy-Lacoste) works parcels scattered across three parishes (Pauillac, Saint-Lambert and Saint-Sauveur), including northern Pauillac sites adjacent to Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet — a wide canvas that gives the wines breadth alongside classic Pauillac power. Sixteen years of bottle age have polished the tannins and brought out the cedar, tobacco, and graphite that make mature Pauillac so rewarding.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2009 Grand-Puy Ducasse shows a small reduction at first, a slightly metallic note that fortunately ebbs away to reveal pleasant baked cherries, tobacco and light graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that feels a little drier than its peers. Slightly rustic in style with a conservative finish. Expected more. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Aromas of blackberries, unsmoked cigar tobacco and cedar/sagebrush jump from the glass of this dense purple-hued Pauillac. Full-bodied with more depth and richness than usual as well as moderate tannins, this potential sleeper of the vintage offers 15-20 years of aging potential. Moreover, it is modestly priced. Purchasers should give it 4-5 years of cellaring and enjoy it over the following two decades." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Unusually deep crimson. Very dark crimson. Sweet candy nose. Not very dense but certainly very sweet in a candy way. Then pretty austere tannins. Pretty dry end." —Jancis Robinson MW

Decanter

"A good yield in Pauillac for Grand-Puy Ducasse at 46hl/ha, this is juicy with well-extracted black fruits and lots of Médoc typicity. It’s not always the sexiest of châteaux (although it has definitely worked hard over the last few years at deepening and fleshing out its flavours) and it really benefits from the generosity of the 2009 vintage. Denis Dubourdieu was the consultant at the time."

Wine Spectator

"A very pure, polished style, with an almost-rounded feel to the beam of cassis, dark plum and black cherry fruit, which gets support from graphite, dark olive and alder wood notes that extend through the finish. Best from 2013 through 2022."
