Chateau Lafon Rochet Saint-Estephe 2020

$5799

The yellow chateau of Saint-Estephe, Lafon-Rochet is a Fourth Growth that has been quietly producing some of the appellation's most reliable wines for decades. The 2020 was crafted under the long stewardship of the Tesseron family, just before the estate transitioned to the Lorenzetti family in 2021. It's a ripe, modern Saint-Estephe in a warm, generous vintage — plenty of dark Cabernet fruit, freshened by the appellation's signature mineral grip. Built to age a decade or two, but already approachable with a long decant. A serious Left Bank Bordeaux at a fair price.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Lafon-Rochet represents the essence of classicism in Bordeaux. Medium in body and finely-cut, Lafon-Rochet is one of the classiest, more refined Saint-Estèphes readers will come across. Dark fruit, earthiness, lavender, licorice, menthol and cloves add nuance, but it is the wine's balance and vibrancy that impress most. Give the tannins a few years to melt away. Superb."

Robert Parker

"The 2020 Lafon-Rochet opens in the glass with aromas of cassis, plums and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep palate with good concentration, lively acids and plenty of powdery structuring tannin that asserts itself on the finish. This, too, is more structured than its 2019 counterpart and will require a bit of patience." —William Kelley

Decanter

93 points

"This has a delicate, seductive charm to it, slowly displaying scented blueberries and raspberries before layers of salty minerality, liquorice and cooling blue fruits come into play. It’s not immediately upfront, more calm and collected, slowly growing in stature and presence. Tannins are fine but mouthcoating; this isn't a light wine but is elegant. Textured, chalky wet stone and a grainy element with tobacco and liquorice. Impressive complexity and drama. Sophisticated, intellectual, luminous and detailed. Sublime and just gets better and better."

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Plump and open, with a burst of loganberry and mulberry fruit backed by light tobacco, warm earth and savory notes. Shows a savory edge, which moves to the lead on the finish. Solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot."

Wine Enthusiast

"Barrel Sample. Richly structured, powered by dark tannins and rich blackberry fruits, this estate has produced a very fine wine this vintage. The structure is considerable while keeping fruitiness and fine acidity in focus. The wine will certainly age well."

More about Chateau Lafon Rochet

Lafon-Rochet lies about a football field away from Chateau Lafite Rothschild. It is not a Pauillac however, as it is just over the border in Saint-Estéphe. Quality has very much been on the rise in recent years.
