Chateau Le Puy VdF Rouge Emilien 2022

Emilien is Château Le Puy's flagship red and a longtime Flatiron favorite, named for an ancestor and made with the same quietly radical approach the family has followed for 400+ years. Farmed biodynamically (Demeter-certified) in the Côtes de Francs, it's a Merlot-led Bordeaux blend bottled as Vin de France, fermented with native yeasts and raised without fining or filtration. The hook is effortless elegance: perfect fruit, limestone terroir, a light touch with oak. As the team puts it, there needs to be more Bordeaux like this. The 2022 drinks beautifully young but will also reward a few years in the cellar.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

More about Chateau Le Puy

It’s always exciting when a new vintage of Château Le Puy arrives. It’s been nearly a decade since Neal Rosenthal started importing this idiosyncratic and genuinely artisanal estate, and the wines have gone from obscure to coveted, a product of not just their incredible fidelity to low-intervention winemaking and organic farming, but also the sheer consistency of quality every vintage.

For the uninitiated, Le Puy’s terroirs lie in the Côte de Francs, a small AOP on the same plateau of clay and limestone as nearby Saint-Emilion. The estate has been around since 1610, and has been farmed naturally the whole time, never subjected to synthetic treatments.

One of the most interesting things about Le Puy’s wines is how much they taste like classic Right Bank Bordeaux (especially with age), but with energy and lift that sets them apart. We wish some of the more exalted names on the right bank would take a page from Le Puy’s book!

Long-time readers will know today’s cuvée well: the easy-drinking Ducs de Nauves and Emilien, Le Puy’s flagship wine.

Emilien is aged two years in large, century-old oak foudres. We’ve enjoyed remarkable bottles with significant age; a 1975 we tasted about 8 years ago was spectacular. But the wine also drinks well on release, provided you decant it a few hours and have it with food. It’s substantial but freshly styled, with notes of dried cherries, leather, herbs and damp earth.

Ducs is maybe the most charming wine in all of Bordeaux. It’s built to be drunk on release – aged just a year in cement – and tastes like a hypothetical cross between a Saint-Emilion and a Brouilly. Juicy, sure, but not exactly simple.

<p>Le Puy’s main-production wine “Emilien” is comprised of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Carmenère. After spontaneous fermentation in cement vats, it is transferred to 50-hectoliter foudres for one year, then to old 225-liter barriques for an additional year, before being bottled without fining or filtering. There is a harmony of elements in the wines of Le Puy—a weaving together of acid, fruit, tannin, mineral and earth—that is spellbinding. The “Emilien” offers a succulence of sappy red fruit as well as a driving, tunneling palate of remarkable energy. A subtle but irresistible umami pervades the palate and grounds some of the wine’s higher tones with its savory pull.</p>
