Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion Pessac Leognan 2009

$11499

From the profound 2009 vintage, this 10.3-hectare Graves estate has emerged as one of Pessac-Léognan's most compelling voices, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot with distinctive character. Medium ruby with dark pigmentation, it reveals ripe dark-berry aromas with refined restraint, followed by a palate of leafy complexity layered over concentrated licorice-tinged dark fruit. Damson and dark plum flavors persist on a long, eloquent finish—a wine of natural elegance that continues to evolve beautifully.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 2009 Les Carmes Haut-Brion offer ample red cherry and crushed strawberry on the nose, touches of brown spice and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little dry in the middle but with more flesh on the finish. It is still not a convincing showing compared to previous bottles and I will seek to revisit this in the future. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

92 points

"Beautiful, Burgundian-like aromas of burning embers, roasted Provencal herbs, black currants and sweet cherries and raspberries emerge from this medium-bodied, elegant 2009 Pessac-Leognan. Medium to full-bodied and seductive with sweet tannins as well as a surprisingly evolved, precocious personality (even for a 2009), it will offer delicious drinking over the next 15+ years. This is another wine in which I noticed subtle bottle variation." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Some race and savour. Glossy fruit and real succulence. Pretty dry on the finish but not exaggeratedly drying. One can see Graves here thank goodness! Intense and reasonably complex and ambitious for the long term." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Still youthfully tight, this shows a packed core of plum, cassis and blackberry fruit wrapped with bittersweet cocoa, tobacco and charcoal notes. Nice drive marks the finish, with gorgeous polish, as a mouthwatering linzer torte note expands as it opens in the glass."

Wine Enthusiast

"Barrel sample. Spicy wood here, with stewed pear and ginger, as well as fine berry fruits. The wine is solid, but elegant, with great ripe fruits." —Roger Voss
