Chateau Magrez Fombrauge Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2005

$19899

A micro-cuvée and one of Bernard Magrez's most ambitious projects in Saint-Émilion. Magrez Fombrauge is a separate label from the larger Château Fombrauge, drawn from just 1.8 hectares of the estate's best parcels and crafted with Burgundian techniques—cold pre-fermentation maceration, malolactic in barrel, lees aging, no fining or filtration—under the consultancy of Michel Rolland. The 2005 is now twenty years old, from one of Bordeaux's truly great modern vintages, and shows the density, polish, and complexity that come with proper bottle age. Drinking in its prime and built to last another decade-plus.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"(77% merlot, 14% cabernet franc and 9% cabernet sauvignon) Red-ruby. Sweet aromas of black raspberry, currant and mocha. Fat, lush and stuffed with fruit. The black raspberry and mocha flavors are seriously chewy. A very successful vintage for this wine, as even the cabernet sauvignon grapes on this cold clay soil ripened thoroughly."

Robert Parker

97 points

"This luxury micro-cuvée is made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from the best parcel on the large Fombrauge vineyard. The wine is aged 22 months in 100% new French oak and bottled with no pumping, fining or filtration. Blueberries galore along with some spring flower notes lead to a sensational perfume that borders on perfection. The color is a saturated purple right to the rim. Full-bodied, with the new oak well-concealed, this super-rich, concentrated and extracted wine is massive and set for another 25-30 years of life. This is one of the most prodigious wines of the vintage and another great success for Bernard Magrez and his winemaking team, led by Michel Rolland." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

15.5 points

"Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Light nose. Search for the flavour! Lots of structure. Very drying finish. Not much charm." —Jancis Robinson MW

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Aromas of blackberry, mineral, vanilla and milk chocolate follow through to a full body, with super well-integrated tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced, refined and harmonious. Best after 2011."
