Chateau Meyney Saint-Estephe 2015

$5999

Meyney is one of Saint-Estèphe's longest-standing overachievers, an historic estate founded as a monastery vineyard in 1662 and sitting on a stunning riverside plateau next to Château Montrose. Now classified Cru Bourgeois Supérieur (following the 2020 reclassification), it produces wines of structure and depth at a level that punches well above its station. The 2015 is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (52%) with Merlot and a splash of Petit Verdot, from a vintage that gave Saint-Estèphe ripe fruit balanced by classical Médoc grip. A decade in, it's just hitting stride.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2015 Meyney leaps from the glass with copious black cherry, raspberry coulis and light floral scents. This is more exuberant than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, graphite-tinged black fruit at its core and a solid, sinewy finish. Hopefully, time will tame this. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"The medium garnet-purple colored 2015 Meyney is scented of cassis, red currants and black berries with wafts of earth and herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and firm with nice fruit expression and vibrancy." —Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Deep crimson hue. Lifted aromatically with blackcurrant and liquorice notes to the fore. Suave and full on attack with an abundance of generous fruit. Big charge of tannin but smooth and polished. Great balance. Probably the most seductive in the line-up. Plenty more to come."

Decanter

90 points

"Leathery cassis fruit and broad – even massive – ripeness in the Meyney style. Will be very good with a bit of age."

Wine Enthusiast

"Barrel Sample. This wine is poised between great fruits and firm tannins. It has both in abundance, bursting with black currant flavors and lively acidity." —Roger Voss

More about Chateau Meyney

Nobody should be surprised by the quality from this widely undervalued estate. Although Meyney was not part of the 1855 classification of Bordeaux, it happens to be an “unclassified growth” that drinks like one. This is partly thanks to dramatic improvements in recent years: cleaner élevage, sharper vineyard work, and clearer terroir expression.
