This Estate Cabernet comes from a milestone year at Chateau Montelena. 1982 was a century after the estate's 1882 founding, and it was the year Bo Barrett was appointed winemaker. He was no newcomer: Bo had worked every harvest at Montelena since 1972. The growing season was cool, with a wet winter and a cool spring. It also brought a record crop, so heavy that the vines were thinned five times to bring yields down (that's a lot of fruit left on the ground for the sake of what stayed on the vine). Rain in mid-September caused some problems, but Montelena finished picking before the major October storms arrived, and the estate describes the vintage as big wines from clean, fat, juicy berries. More than four decades on, this is a chance to taste a turning point at one of Calistoga's historic houses. It's a bottle for the curious drinker, not the trophy hunter.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Tasting Profile

Montelena's Estate Cabernet is typically built in a firm, classic Napa mould, closer to traditional Bordeaux than to a plush fruit bomb. With long bottle age, expect the dark currant fruit to have mellowed into dried cherry, cedar, earth, tobacco and a hint of mint, with softened tannins and fresh acidity carrying a savoury, lingering finish.
