Chateau Pichon Baron Pauillac 2006

$25499

Pichon Baron is a Pauillac Second Growth that has performed at First Growth level for much of the AXA Millésimes era. The 2006 vintage is one of the great classical Pauillacs of its decade: structured, cool, savory, with the kind of cassis-and-graphite spine that needed nearly two decades to unwind. Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant with a generous Merlot fleshing-out, it finally reads as fully mature without losing its tannic backbone. A textbook expression of why the left bank ages the way it does.

Antonio Galloni

90 points

"The 2006 Pichon-Baron has the same showy crème de cassis–tinged bouquet that I have remarked upon in previous bottles, pure but missing the complexity of the 2004 and 2005. The medium-bodied palate is bold and assertive, with thick, chewy tannin, but the class and sophistication are not at the level I would expect. It offers volume and matière but not panache. I am intrigued to see how it will age. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château." —Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

17 points

"Deep garnet hue. Dark fruit (blackcurrant) with a hint of vanilla oak. Cabernet element definitely comes through. Muscular in character, the tannins powerful and taught. Sufficient weight but after the generosity of 2005 seems a little reserved. Pauillac power evident."

Decanter

95 points

"A rather solar expression suffuses the complex nose mingling notes of prunes, spices, and forest floor. This is not the most structured wine of this tasting but it remains a textbook Pichon Baron, as it has the telltale upright style, tension, and freshness, as well as an airborne finish. Superb wine whose complexity and depth sneak up on you."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"There's an excellent dark color to this, with blowsy, rich aromas of crushed blackberry and currant. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. The center palate will fill in with time. This has lovely balance."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"Beautifully ripe Cabernet dominates this dense, complex wine. It is balanced so finely, as if on the point of a pin, with black currant juice freshness set against dark tannins and powerful structure. A wine to age, and one of the successes of 2006." —Roger Voss
