Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac 2014

$17999

Pichon Comtesse is the silkier, more perfumed half of the old Pichon estate, today owned by the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer. The 2014 is one of those sneaky-good classical Pauillac vintages that the market briefly underrated and the cellar crowd quietly piled into. A traditional Cabernet-led blend rounded with Merlot and a kiss of Petit Verdot, it has the floral, graphite-edged Comtesse signature plus enough structure to keep evolving. The 2014s are drinking beautifully now and have a long road ahead.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"The 2014 Pichon Comtesse de Lalande has a gorgeous bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, scents of pencil box and wild hedgerow, gaining intensity in the glass. It is a little more opulent than the Pichon Baron. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, silky smooth in texture, moving discretely towards secondary flavors. However, the finish is brighter than many of its peers. Excellent. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year On tasting and blind at the Southwold 10-Year On." —Neal Martin

"Tasted blind. Lifted vegy nose. Thick and sweet and pretty aggressively modern. Lots and lots going on here. Should be rewarding but it is not classic. Much lighter than Ch Pichon Baron." —Jancis Robinson MW

Decanter

95 points

"Rich, deep damson with a violet edge. On the nose it offers dark chocolate and liquorice. The palate is still tight, barely unfurling, more closed than during En Primeur. I love it that even a young Pichon Comtesse works its silky structure and lets a little light and space in between the fruit. Excellent lift on the finish."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Very solid, with lots of cassis bush and sweet tobacco notes adding texture to the core of crushed ripe raspberry, blackberry and plum fruit flavors. A licorice snap accent dances throughout, while a bolt of iron runs underneath. This is Pauillac. Best from 2020 through 2035."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"Warm and ripe, this is a beautifully balanced wine. It is packed with black-currant fruits that are bursting out of the glass. A darker side comes with the tannins and new wood flavors that are still prominent. It looks likely the wine will develop slowly, so don't drink before 2025." —Roger Voss
