Chateau Potensac Medoc 2008

$4899

Even back when Bordeaux was expensive, Château Potensac screamed out value. Sitting in the northern Médoc just above Saint-Estèphe, Potensac was overlooked in the 1855 classification like its neighbor Sociando-Mallet, but it produces better wine than plenty of Third and Fourth Growths. The Delon family farms it with the same crew responsible for Léoville Las Cases. As global warming reshapes Bordeaux, this cooler site has become newly relevant: Potensac can more easily produce the classically-styled Bordeaux that so many of us miss. The 2008 is exactly that wine, fully mature, savory and refined.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"The 2008 Potensac has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, briary and cedar aromas that gently waft from the glass, the oak here nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannin. This comes across a little savory in style, hints of dried blood infusing the black fruit towards the slightly dry but still balanced finish. Fine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

87 points

"Sweet plum, deep cherry and currant notes as well as underbrush and earthiness are all present in this elegant, mid-weight wine, which has good freshness, decent acidity, and ripe tannin. It should drink nicely for up to 7-8 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

87 points

"Fresh and pure, with a friendly beam of raspberry and black cherry fruit, pushed gently by mineral and tobacco hints on the open-knit finish."

More about Chateau Potensac

Château Potensac is one of Bordeaux's great under-the-radar gems. Like any true claret, it can be classically restrained and firm in youth, but wonderfully perfumed and cooly delicious with bottle age. The wine is made by the Delon family, who also make legendary Saint-Julien 2nd growth, Léoville Las Cases. Potensac comes from vines further north, on gravel-over-limestone hills in the Médoc appellation just beyond Saint-Estèphe.
