Antonio Galloni

"Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Poujeaux is superb. Succulent red cherry, spice, cedar, tobacco and leather give the 2018 striking textural richness to match is bold, racy personality. Silky tannins make the 2018 very easy to taste now, but this is a wine with the potential to age beautifully for many years. Impressive."

"Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Poujeaux comes bounding out of the glass with youthful scents of crushed black cherries, mulberries and blackcurrant pastilles, plus hints of menthol, pencil lead and tobacco leaf. The medium-bodied palate offers just enough fruit and freshness with a chewy texture and dried herbs lift on the finish." — Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Decanter

"Heady scents of wild flowers and cassis fruit with dried herbs and liquorice accents. Full and fleshy, this is round and mouth filling with juicy, chewy fruit that has bitter toasted edges of cinnamon, dark chocolate, espresso and cedar. On the ripe fruit side, with flashes of heat, but the texture is lovely, sleek and direct with structured, integrated chalky tannins and a fresh mentholated and eucalyptus finish. Needs to soften a little more, but this is a classic take on the vintage with appealing typicity. Round, filling, charming in a dark, sultry way. From a 70-hectare vineyard on gravel. This is a blend of 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Ageing 12 months in oak, 33% new and 67% second and third-fill barrels."

"Direct, with loganberry and damson plum flavors that are gently mulled with light anise and herb notes. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc."

Wine Enthusiast

"This is a big-hearted wine, ripe with both black-plum flavors and generous tannins. At this stage the structure is prominent, but with the weight of the fruits, the wine will balance out full, ripe and ready to drink from 2026."

More about Chateau Poujeaux

Château Poujeaux is one of Bordeaux’s great insider wines. Unclassified in 1855, it nevertheless performs at the level of a 3rd or 4th growth. It’s reliable even in tough vintages, especially those afflicted by excessive rain. While a good deal more supple in youth than many of the top wines of the Left Bank, Poujeaux also ages splendidly for decades.

So why is it still an insider wine? Blame it on geography. Poujeaux hails from Moulis, an inland AOC tucked behind the Médoc’s more famous, gravel-rich appellations located nearer to the Gironde. As you move in from the estuary, the soils become sandier and flatter – not ideal for making great Bordeaux.

Moulis’ secret, however, is that it’s one of the few inland areas of the Médoc to boast deep gravelly soils, as well as a little elevation. This combination is crucial to growing healthy, fully ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. Not all of Moulis enjoys this superior terroir, but Château Poujeaux does, and it’s probably why it’s generally considered to be the appellations greatest estate.
