Clement & Fils Champagne BdB Extra Brut Les Cornambeaux 2018

$10999

A single-plot Blanc de Blancs from one of Champagne's most quietly fascinating addresses. Clement & Fils is a fourth-generation grower in Congy, deep in the Coteaux du Petit Morin south of the Cote des Blancs, where Aurelien Clement took the reins in 2013 and converted the family's holdings to organics. Les Cornambeaux comes from a tiny parcel of Chardonnay planted in 1961, fermented and aged in 205-liter Champagne barrels and dosed Extra Brut at just 1 g/L. The result is chalky, taut, deeply savory Champagne with the texture of a serious white Burgundy and the cut of a wine that has nothing to hide. Only 1,766 bottles were made.

"The 2018 Blanc de Blancs Les Cornabeaux was disgorged in late 2022 with one gram per liter dosage. While this vintage is frequently a little blowsy in Champagne, Clément has produced a wine of appealing refinement and tension, redolent of white flowers, pear, hazelnut, beeswax and sweet pastry. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with racy acids and a bright, chalky finish, it's produced from a parcel planted in 1961 that's vinified in 205-liter barrels." —William Kelley

More about

The talented Delphine Cazals is a fourth-generation winemaker at Champagne Claude Cazals. Her 10 hectares of biodynamically-farmed vineyards are located in four of the most prestigious villages of the Côte des Blancs: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus, and Villeneuve, all with Premier Cru or Grand Cru status. Bright-white and chalky with Jurassic marine fossils and Kimmeridgian limestone beneath the topsoil, this is Chardonnay terroir most winemakers would kill for.

Cazals' crown jewel, a Grand Cru vineyard in Oger, was purchased by Delphine’s grandfather in 1957 and planted entirely to Chardonnay. In 1995, Delphine successfully petitioned the Comité Champagne to have the vineyard designated a Clos — an accomplishment of which she's especially proud.
