Clement & Fils Champagne Myosotis Champetre NV ['18 Base]

$6499

The everyday cuvee from Clement & Fils, a tiny grower house in Congy where Aurelien Clement farms 6.5 hectares organically across the Coteaux du Petit Morin and a parcel down in Les Riceys. Myosotis Champetre takes its name from the forget-me-nots that bloom between the vines each spring, and the wine has that same wildflower freshness. Built on the 2018 base from Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it's an Extra Brut done entirely by hand, from harvest through riddling and disgorgement. Open, fruit-forward and immediate, but with a chalky undertow that gives it the bones of something more serious.

"A Pinot Meunier-dominant cuvée, the latest release of Clément's NV Myosotis Champêtre (2018) is based on the 2018 vintage, complemented by 30% reserve wines, and was disgorged in January 2022. Bursting with aromas of pear, peach, orange zest, dried white flowers, toasted nuts and fresh bread, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and a fine-boned, complex profile." —William Kelley

More about

The talented Delphine Cazals is a fourth-generation winemaker at Champagne Claude Cazals. Her 10 hectares of biodynamically-farmed vineyards are located in four of the most prestigious villages of the Côte des Blancs: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Vertus, and Villeneuve, all with Premier Cru or Grand Cru status. Bright-white and chalky with Jurassic marine fossils and Kimmeridgian limestone beneath the topsoil, this is Chardonnay terroir most winemakers would kill for.

Cazals' crown jewel, a Grand Cru vineyard in Oger, was purchased by Delphine’s grandfather in 1957 and planted entirely to Chardonnay. In 1995, Delphine successfully petitioned the Comité Champagne to have the vineyard designated a Clos — an accomplishment of which she's especially proud.
