A Margaux made by one man, biodynamically, in a small cellar built into the side of his own house. Michel Théron has run Clos du Jaugueyron as a one-man garagiste operation for more than 25 years, farming biodynamically on the perpetually humid Left Bank, where it is considerably harder — and rarer — than in most places. Nout, named for the Egyptian sky goddess, comes from a parcel in the lieu-dit of Tertre that he took over in 2009, planted on gravel over clay: a Merlot-led blend filled out with Cabernet Sauvignon, macerated with some whole bunches, fermented in concrete and raised in barrel with startlingly little intervention. The 2020 was a hot, dry, drought-marked season in Bordeaux that gave small berries and concentrated wines, and here that power arrives with the perfume and lift that make great Margaux so breathtaking. Made in vanishingly small quantities; decant it if you are opening one now, or give it a decade.

More about Clos du Jaugueyron

Michel Theron (of Margaux estate Clos du Jaugueyron) is one of our favorite winemakers in Bordeaux, one of a handful of vignerons who are making the region truly exciting again.

Theron farms biodynamically, which is still weird for Bordeaux, and almost impossible to do in the Médoc. It takes guts (and maybe a little insanity) to pull it off year after year. But he does.

The cellar work is delightfully low-tech and low-intervention, with the wines aged in mostly neutral barrels or cement – practices diametrically opposed to those of big châteaux like Palmer, Margaux etc.

But none of that tells you how good the wines are. They are phenomenal. Like the great Patsy Cline, they are thoughtful and refined without the subtlest sacrifice of soul or purity.

Despite the natural approach, Theron's wine is not wild, funky affairs –they are transparent and convincing reminders that Bordeaux has some of the greatest terroirs in the world.
