Coessens Champagne Extra Brut Exogyre MV

$13999

Jérôme Coessens' Largillier monopole in the Aube is named, in part, for the fossilized oysters — exogyres — embedded in its Kimmeridgian limestone soils, a reminder that this is ancient seabed. The Extra Brut Exogyre is the cuvée that most directly channels that marine heritage. Drawn from a perpetual solera started in 2006 and built from all four parcels of the Largillier vineyard, this multi-vintage 100% Pinot Noir wears its low dosage with ease, showing mirabelle, orange, cherry, and rye bread on a chalky, saline frame. Disgorged with just a touch of sweetness, it's grower Champagne at its most pure and site-driven.

"Drawn from a perpetual reserve established in 2006, spanning vintages through 2020, the NV Extra-Brut Exogyre Largillier presents a bouquet of mirabelle plum, orange, cherry and rye bread. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, rich and textural, laden with vibrant acidity and concluding with an aromatic finish. Disgorged in November 2024 with a dosage of four grams per liter, it remains a vivid and harmonious, with plenty of energy and verve despite its historic blend." —Kristaps Karklins

More about

Jérôme Coessens takes the Grower Champagne movement to its logical conclusion, with a simple but – for Champagne – radical philosophy: one vineyard, one grape variety, and one vintage. You can add to that “one man”, as this is a Champagne producer who does a little bit of everything himself. And he does so obsessively.

Jerome is blessed to own 100% of Largillier, a vineyard in the Aube that is one of the most fascinating sites in the entire region. The soil here is mostly Kimmeridgian limestone, the very same geological vein that runs through Chablis. However, instead of Chardonnay, Coessens plants Pinot Noir. This unique combination creates a fascinating tension: the clay provides broad, muscular structure and fruit density, while the limestone injects a vibrating, salty minerality that keeps the wine upright and energetic. It is a terroir that demands attention, producing wines that feel more like a grand cru Burgundy with bubbles than a traditional aperitif Champagne.

Some of the grapes he grows here are sold to Guillaume Selosse, who produces a Champagne from them that is hard to acquire for less than $600. Some of the grapes, Jerome keeps for himself. Coessens produces very little wine, and his dedication to the "monopole" concept means that once the vintage is gone, the specific expression of that year is lost forever. These are wines for those who prefer personality over polish, and terroir over brand names.
