Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2019

$7499

Domaine Comte Armand is best known for the legendary Pommard Clos des Epeneaux monopole, but the small range of bottlings outside Pommard is some of the most quietly thrilling Pinot in the Côte de Beaune. The Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru is a blend of two top parcels, Les Breterins and Bas des Duresses, on limestone and clay just over the hill from Monthelie. The estate farms biodynamically (Ecocert), ferments whole-cluster-free with native yeasts in wooden vats, and ages in barrel with a restrained 25 percent new oak. 2019 was an outstanding vintage, ripe but with the kind of acid backbone that makes Burgundy age. Lovely, fresh cherry fruit and real structure — a Premier Cru with serious bones at a fraction of Pommard money.

Burghound

91 points

"This is also quite ripe with its aromas of poached plum, black cherry, earth, and a touch of floral character. The saline-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess fine very and richness while delivering slightly better length on the moderately grippy and rustic finale."

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2019 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a blend of two vineyards Les Beautrains and Les Bas des Duresses as usual, matured in around 25% new oak. It has a refined bouquet with a little more purity and sensuality compared to the Auxey Village. The palate is well balanced with gentle grip on the entry, quite rich but fresh in style with candied orange peel infusing the mixture of black and blueberry fruit. Crunchy, almost brittle texture towards the finish which is surprising given the type of growing season. Recommended." —Neal Martin

Decanter

94 points

"Grapes from a hectare of vines in south-facing parcels Les Duresses and Les Breterins are destemmed and fermented on natural yeasts prior to 18 months ageing in cask (25% new) to produce this lovely, rich wine, dense with dark blackberry fruit and firm but well-integrated tannins. A wonderful wine that will open in a couple years and continue to improve for at least a decade beyond that."
