Cru Beaujolais is no longer a secret among wine lovers. For about a decade now names like Lapierre, Foillard and Metras have been among the most sought after by collectors and everyday wine drinkers alike. We have long believed that the wines of Daniel Bouland were deserving of the same attention and devotion, and in the last couple of years that has become a reality.

Bouland's wines come from very old vines and seem to operate on three well-delineated layers: An airy top register of flowers and flint-smoke, the middle layer flush with refined (and sometimes powerful) red fruits, and precise, vividly mineral structures at the low register. It's this near- visualizable depth and detail that sets them apart. Bouland would probably make a great photographer.

The wines can age. Ten years is not asking too much. But most also drink wonderfully on release - especially the Chiroubles, Melanie, and Corcelette. They have brains and brawn. And, most importantly, beauty.

"Dark ruby. Aromas of cherry pit, dark berries and licorice are lifted by a smoky mineral note. Broad and chewy on the palate, offering blueberry and bitter cherry flavors that stretch out slowly and become livelier with aeration. Dusty tannins build steadily on a very long, dark-berry-dominated finish that shows excellent delineation and spicy thrust. This was the most backward '16 that I tasted from Bouland." -Josh Raynolds

"The 2016 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes from Daniel Bouland is always one of the most elegant renditions of Morgon, as well as a personal favorite, and this vintage doesn't disappoint, wafting from the glass with youthful aromas of black cherries, cassis, spiced plum and herbs. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, sappy and nicely balanced, with a crunchy core of fruit, hidden reserves of depth and concentration and fine-grained tannins that will be pure velvet with a few years of bottle age. After the more heady, powerful 2015 rendition, this marks a return to more classical proportions for this cuvée. Drink it now for its youthful fruit, or follow it for the next 10 to 15 years." -William Kelley
