Crystalline, unoaked Chablis from a hidden gem of a domaine
Denis Race was just thirteen years old when he began working his family's vines in the heart of Chablis. He took over a few years later and immediately began transforming it from an operation that sold all their fruit to large négociants into a classic domaine that bottles all their own production in the purest Chablis style conceivable: no oak, mineral-driven, high-toned.
Denis’ daughter Claire took over in 2005 but Denis is still around; at harvest he brings in the fruit before handing it off to Claire who manages the winemaking from there. She’s committed to the family’s terroir-focused style. Everything is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and ages without oak influence. This is a key (and relatively rare) choice that lets the Kimmeridgian limestone shine. As she put it in one interview: barrels "add something we believe a Chablis doesn't need."
The village Chablis is a blend of 30 different parcels (some with vines over 80 years old), which makes for a wine of real complexity. The 2024 vintage was brutal on the growers: frost, hail, and relentless rain slashed yields across the region. But where healthy fruit survived, the wines are shaping up to be classically styled and vibrant, with the kind of mineral tension and focus that Chablis lovers live for. The perfect kind of vintage for Race’s style!
