By Farr’s Pinot Noir: It will make you rethink Australia
When we think of Australian wine, our minds usually jump straight to the sun-baked Barossa Valley and its massive, inky Shiraz. But if you venture down to the cool, maritime fringes of Victoria, you'll find a completely different world. That’s where the father-and-son duo of Gary and Nick Farr have spent decades cementing their status as absolute royalty when it comes to Southern Hemisphere Pinot Noir. While their home estate in Geelong is already legendary, their Irrewarra project represents a thrilling leap into even more extreme, challenging terroir.
Irrewarra, an Aboriginal word meaning "long spear throw," sits in the Western District of Victoria, roughly an hour and a half past their home vines. It is a harsh, wet, and relentlessly cold place to farm. For most grapes, this kind of climate would spell total disaster, but for Pinot Noir, it’s practically the perfect setup. The vines here have to seriously struggle, plunging their roots deep into the sloping soils just to survive, which results in fruit with incredible tension and naturally tiny yields.
The Farr family's winemaking playbook is heavily inspired by the time they spent working harvests at Domaine Dujac over in Burgundy. For the 2021 Irrewarra Pinot Noir, Nick Farr leaned heavily on whole-cluster fermentation and native yeasts. This old-school, hands-off approach gives the wine a distinct, savory backbone, grounding that pristine Australian fruit in a foundation of damp earth and spice.
For those of you who don’t keep track of Victorian vintages, 2021 was magnificent, marked by cool conditions that allowed for a long, slow ripening period. In the glass, this wine is ethereal and intensely aromatic. It trades heavy extraction for a delicate interplay of sour cherry, damp forest floor, and a hint of smoked meat. The tannins are fine and structural, carrying a long, mouth-watering finish that feels incredibly vibrant.
If you are a Burgundy purist who has historically been skeptical of New World Pinot Noir – or a Californian Pinot purist skeptical of all things Southern hemisphere (when know you’re out there!) – this is the bottle that will change your mind. It is a masterclass in cool-climate winemaking and a testament to the fact that Australia’s wine landscape is far more diverse and nuanced than it is often given credit for.
