Denis Race Chablis 2024

$2899

Domaine Denis Race is a fifth-generation family estate in Chablis with eighteen hectares spread across some of the appellation's best sites, now run by Claire Race. The farming is lutte raisonnée — low-intervention and minimal-chemical — and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel only, with no oak to get in the way of the chalk. Their village Chablis is pure Kimmeridgian limestone in a glass: pale lemon, citrus and green apple, oyster shell, and that bracing, mouthwatering Chablis acidity. This is the bottle to buy by the case for everyday raw-bar nights and weeknight roast chicken — a benchmark Chablis from a quietly serious producer.

More about Denis Race

Finding value in Burgundy is tough, but one bright spot has remained a beacon of good value: Chablis. No, you won’t find value in Dauvissat or Raveneau, but you will find all kinds of producers with very similar aesthetics offering wines for a mere fraction of the price.

One of them is Laurence and Denis Race. These are delicious, classic Chablis with old-school sensibility and the pricing to match. The domain is 4 generations old, and these days Laurence and Denis’ daughters, Claire and Marine, are doing most of the heavy lifting and winemaking.

The vineyard work is lutte raisonée and when necessary they employ a large, “ecological” cloth covering to protect the buds from frost. The winemaking is straightforward and gentle, using gravity to move the juice into stainless steel tanks for fermentation and aging. No barrels are used at Race, the emphasis is on pure, clean minerality.
