Daniel Bouland Cote de Brouilly Cuvee Melanie 2017 (1.5L)

A rounder, more decadent affair, with dark strawberry and lavender notes. Pretty sexy/sappy, and rich enough for red meat dishes. 70 year-old vines

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Vivid magenta. Powerful cherry, dark berry and game aromas are sharpened by suggestions of cracked pepper and smoky minerals. Broad and fleshy but lively as well, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of candied violet. Displays solid dark-fruit thrust, even tannins and lingering spiciness on the impressively long, smoke-tinged finish." —Josh Raynolds

"From a south-facing site near Château Thivin, the 2017 Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Melanie exhibits a deep bouquet of blackberry, wild berries, grilled meat, dark chocolate and licorice. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and ample, with a juicy core of fruit, ripe but chewy structuring tannins in abundance and a gourmand, layered profile." —William Kelley

More about Daniel Bouland

Cru Beaujolais is no longer a secret among wine lovers. For about a decade now names like Lapierre, Foillard and Metras have been among the most sought after by collectors and everyday wine drinkers alike. We have long believed that the wines of Daniel Bouland were deserving of the same attention and devotion, and in the last couple of years that has become a reality.

Bouland's wines come from very old vines and seem to operate on three well-delineated layers: An airy top register of flowers and flint-smoke, the middle layer flush with refined (and sometimes powerful) red fruits, and precise, vividly mineral structures at the low register. It's this near- visualizable depth and detail that sets them apart. Bouland would probably make a great photographer.

The wines can age. Ten years is not asking too much. But most also drink wonderfully on release - especially the Chiroubles, Melanie, and Corcelette. They have brains and brawn. And, most importantly, beauty.
