Deutz Champagne Brut Hommage a William Deutz La Cote Glaciere 2018

$13499

Deutz's Hommage a William Deutz line is the house's creative playground, a pair of single-vineyard prestige cuvees that honor the founder by spotlighting the kind of terroir-specific Champagne that the great houses rarely bottle on their own. La Cote Glaciere is 100% Pinot Noir from a 1.9-hectare south-facing plot in Ay, planted in 1967, with chalk just 70 cm beneath the surface. The 2018 was harvested early to preserve freshness, and the result is opulent and generous but laser-focused, with the chalk underpinning everything. Limited production from one of Champagne's most quietly serious houses.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 Brut Hommage à William Deutz La Côte Glacière offers up hints of pear, green apple, mint, white flowers and ginger. This 100% Pinot Noir emerges from a tiny 1.9-hectare parcel and shows off the brighter, nervier side of Pinot to great effect. Brisk acids pull it all together on the vibrant finish." —Antonio Galloni

"Derived from an old-vine, south-facing parcel in Aÿ, the 2018 Hommage à William Deutz La Côte Glacière was disgorged in April 2024 with a dosage of seven grams per liter. It emerges from the glass with aromas of ripe peach, pear and orange zest mingling with macadamia nut and hyacinth. On the palate, it is full-bodied, broad-shouldered, fleshy and decidedly powerful, driven by a rich core of fruit, yet it falls short of delivering the tension and precision required for the balance. Textural and laden with ripe acidity, it concludes with a phenolic finish, presenting itself as something of a heavyweight this year—missing the depth evident in the other vintage-dated cuvées of the lineup." —Kristaps Karklins

"A minerally Champagne that’s supple and harmonious, with a satiny texture on the palate. Offers a refined weave of white cherry, blood orange pith, Marcona almond and crystallized honey notes, with smoke, oyster shell and saline accents pushing through and echoing on the finish."

More about Deutz

The Grower Champagne movement has encouraged us to explore Champagne’s many regions, villages and vineyard sites. Meanwhile, Champagne houses – good ones like Deutz – offer a slightly different kind of adventure, and it is one that we highly recommend embarking on.

Deutz was not always a great Champagne house. Although famous back in the 19th century, at the end of the 20th century it was yet another medium-sized house churning lackluster Champagnes for supermarkets. Then it was purchased by the same family that owns Louis Roederer – perhaps the best of the big houses -- and everything changed. Investment money came in, and rigorous production methods were introduced. Deutz is now considered one of the top houses by in-the-know Champagne lovers.

So what adventure can it offer? An exploration of an attractive and unique “house style”. That is what the great houses offer: not necessarily a terroir-specific wine (though they are increasingly producing single-vineyard wines), but rather a specific philosophy and style.

The Deutz philosophy is expressed in its wine-making. First, there is a very slow, low-temperature fermentation. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to proceed naturally. The wines are never aged in oak barrels, resting only in steel cuves (or in bottle). This method is a bit unusual, but quite traditional, and actually very similar to what they do at Billecart-Salmon.

The style combines fresh elegant fruit, easy drinkability and vinosity. Deutz thinks of their Champagnes as wines to enjoy with a meal.
