Do Ferreiro Rias Baixas Albarino 2024

$3699

Do Ferreiro is one of those producer names that gets quoted whenever anyone seriously discusses Albarino. Gerardo Mendez farms granitic plots across the Val do Salnes, the historic heart of Rias Baixas, and his standard bottling is blended from over 175 small parcels. The 2024 is classic Do Ferreiro: pale, taut, mineral, with citrus and stone-fruit lift and that briny tension that defines great Salnes Albarino. The kind of wine that explains why Albarino is one of the world's great white grapes when handled by someone who actually cares.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2024 Albariño Do Ferreiro from Salnés, Rías Baixas, presents citrus and floral aromas, including tuberose that might be mistaken for hydrocarbon in this freshly bottled wine. Fresh, smooth and shaped by malic acidity, it leaves a subtle herbal trace on the finish. This is curious in character and simple in flavor." —Joaquín Hidalgo

"When I tasted this wine in mid-June, the nose of the 2024 Albariño was still too closed and a little reductive to show its true colors, but it was in the palate where I could see the harmony and balance of the year, a year with purity and elegance, with a perfect balance between alcohol and ripeness and freshness and acidity, with textbook parameters for good development of aromatics and flavors while keeping the spark from the granite soils. It's very Salnés. Some 90,000 bottles will be produced, but some wine is still to be bottled and kept with the fine lees in stainless steel." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Do Ferreiro

Albariño isn't going anywhere. Some may have guessed that this grape's popularity would come and go like many trends in the wine world, but instead it is more popular now than ever and has become a "go-to" for lovers of expressive, saline and mineral driven white wine.

There are now dozens of excellent producers available here in the US, but one of the originals that helped introduce everyone to the fresh, Galician style of Albariño has to be Do Ferreiro. Top Iberian importer De Maison has represented this now iconic estate for well over a decade and their wines are certainly a big part of the success of the "Green Spain" movement in the U.S.

Do Ferreiro is located in the Salnès sub-zone of Rías Biaxes, which encompasses mountains and hills that rise right along the Atlantic coast in Northwest Spain. The proximity to cool ocean breezes and a more temperate environment than most of the rest of Spain is how they are able to make such exceptionally pure and crisp wines.

The colder water of the Atlantic also provides some incredible options for a whole bounty of fresh sea fare, and the wines of Do Ferreiro are a perfect match for everything that you find in the ocean.
