Domaine Bachey-Legros Santenay Blanc 1er Cru Clos des Gravieres 2023

$7399

This pristine Chardonnay emerges from one of Santenay's finest premier cru terroirs, where six generations of Bachey-Legros family expertise shine through. A pale gold color introduces aromas of fresh white fruit and flowers, while hand-harvested grapes with strict selection yield a wine of purity and precision. The high proportion of older vines in Clos des Gravières delivers concentrated minerality and character—Côte de Beaune quality at remarkable value.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru Blanc comes from 1.7 hectares of vine planted at the top of the vineyard. This has a more classical nose than the Beauregard, with peach skin, citrus fruit and apple peeling notes. The palate is well balanced and a little waxy, with a lightly spiced entry and satisfying extract on the finish. Give this a year in bottle." —Neal Martin

"Lovely depth of flavour, offering pronounced aromas of lemon peel and Granny Smith apples – more taut and chiselled than the Beauregard. The structure is admirably racy for the vintage, with plenty of freshness to counterbalance the rich extract. The grapes are from a section of Jessiaume's Gravières on white marl; there are 1.2ha in production today, with another half-hectare planted but declassified for now. The wine is ageing at present in cask, one-third new."

More about Domaine Bachey-Legros

Bachey-Legros is located on the oldest street in the picturesque little village of Santenay-les-Haut. The neighborhood looks much the same as it did 200 or 300 years ago. Indeed much of what they are about is decidedly “old.”

The family of Bachey-Legros has been farming in and around Santenay for 6 generations, going back to the 19th century, and they are most proud of their old vines, most of which were planted between 1935 and 1955. They farm these vines fastidiously, using traditional techniques and eschewing chemical treatments. They employ a similar old-school approach in the cellar, with gentle extractions and elevage in top notch barrels of varying ages.

Yes, “old” is definitely an apt word here, except when you are talking about the current generation of proprietors Samuel and Lénaic. These brothers are definitely bringing fresh ideas to the operation while continuing the long traditions of their family.
