Clos des Forêts Saint Georges is a monopole: 7.2 hectares in one single piece, owned entirely by Domaine de l'Arlot, so every bottle of this wine comes from them. What makes it worth the attention is the slope. The clos covers the whole geological sequence of Nuits-Saint-Georges, with Ladoix limestone at the bottom, Premeaux limestone in the middle and white oolite at the top, plus ochre silt in places. That's an entire hillside's worth of Pinot Noir in one bottle. The domaine has farmed biodynamically since 2003. Géraldine Godot, a microbiologist and oenologist, took over technical direction in 2014, and since then the house has kept extraction to a minimum and used less new oak, which gives this famously muscular village a lighter touch. For 2024 the grapes were fully destemmed and fermented on native yeasts for 19 days in stainless steel. The wine then spent 15 months in French barrels, 40% of them new. The 2024 season kept growers on edge. A cool, damp flowering in June cost some clusters, then warm, fairly dry weather from August ripened the rest, and picking ran from 18 to 21 September in fine weather. The domaine is upfront that this is a structured, tannic red built for ageing that turns silkier with a few years in the cellar, so buy it to put away.

"The 2024 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with vivacious red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit that leans towards Vosne in style, perhaps just without the violet component. I appreciate the transparency here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, wonderful balance and silky smooth with a very cohesive and tender finish without any shortfall in flavour. This is one wine which I think demonstrates what the 2024 vintage was able to do rather than what it could not." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine de l'Arlot

For several decades now the Domaine de L'Arlot has been following its own path to creating wines that reflect both the subtleties of diverse terroirs and a distinct "house style" that is unique in Burgundy. The Domaine is located in Premeaux, on the southernmost edge of the Cotes-de-Nuits where Nuits-St-Georges tends to resemble Chambolle in elegance and perfume.

In 2015 the very talented Geraldine Godot was given full control of the domaine. She is committed to continuing the traditions of the house including biodynamic farming and a high percentage of whole clusters during fermentation. However she is making small changes, using less extraction and less new oak to achieve even more balance and grace.

The heart of the Domaine's holdings are two 1er Cru monopoles in Nuits-Saints-Georges: Clos de L'Arlot and Clos des Forets. These vineyards produce some of the most elegant wines in Nuits and are perfect examples of the finesse and purity of terroir that L'Arlot achieves.

They also have small parcels of vines in two of the top vineyards in Vosne-Romanée: Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Suchots. These blue chip wines are complimented by a range of excellent values from the Haut-Cotes and other sites surrounding Nuits.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck (duck à l'orange plays up the blood-orange note), squab with cherries, beef bourguignon, coq au vin, wild mushroom fricassée, aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Deep red cherry and crushed strawberry on the nose. Full-bodied but balanced, with fine tannins and a silky, velvety texture. A hint of blood orange keeps it lively, and the finish is generous. 13.5% alcohol.
