Only a road separates this parcel of Romanée-Saint-Vivant from Romanée-Conti, which puts it among the best-located pieces of this Grand Cru. In Burgundy, that address is most of the argument. The vines have been farmed organically since 2000 and biodynamically since 2003. Grapes are moved by gravity rather than pumps, which is the gentle handling a site like this deserves. The vineyard is named for the monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy, who helped spread vines across Burgundy alongside the Abbey of Cîteaux. Until 1990 it belonged to a single grower from Aloxe-Corton, and l'Arlot made its first vintage here in 1991. 2024 kept growers on edge: a cool, damp flowering from around 10 June cost some clusters, but warm, fairly dry weather from August carried the survivors to a harvest in fine weather between 18 and 21 September. The domaine says this cuvée picks up notes of undergrowth and leather as it ages, so buy it to cellar rather than to open tonight.

"The 2024 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru comprises two barrels instead of the usual five with one barrel new. It has fine concentration on the nose in the context of the vintage. The palate is well balanced with ample structure, quite solid tannins but cloaked in layers of pure black cherry and cassis fruit. Very harmonious and poised on the finish that feels very sustained, this is a sophisticated and classy RSV that might even outclass the previous vintage." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine de l'Arlot

For several decades now the Domaine de L'Arlot has been following its own path to creating wines that reflect both the subtleties of diverse terroirs and a distinct "house style" that is unique in Burgundy. The Domaine is located in Premeaux, on the southernmost edge of the Cotes-de-Nuits where Nuits-St-Georges tends to resemble Chambolle in elegance and perfume.

In 2015 the very talented Geraldine Godot was given full control of the domaine. She is committed to continuing the traditions of the house including biodynamic farming and a high percentage of whole clusters during fermentation. However she is making small changes, using less extraction and less new oak to achieve even more balance and grace.

The heart of the Domaine's holdings are two 1er Cru monopoles in Nuits-Saints-Georges: Clos de L'Arlot and Clos des Forets. These vineyards produce some of the most elegant wines in Nuits and are perfect examples of the finesse and purity of terroir that L'Arlot achieves.

They also have small parcels of vines in two of the top vineyards in Vosne-Romanée: Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Suchots. These blue chip wines are complimented by a range of excellent values from the Haut-Cotes and other sites surrounding Nuits.

Perfect Pairings

The domaine's own picks: fillet of beef with truffle sauce, pressed duck, or chicken with ceps.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Romanée-Saint-Vivant profile: red cherry, raspberry and violet with a touch of sweet spice, on a silky, finely knit palate with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. Lightly toasted French oak typically stays in the background. Built to age, it tends to move toward undergrowth and leather with time, finishing long and perfumed.
