"The 2020 Vouvray Sec, tasted in the cellar last year, and this year chez moi, is a quiet, unshowy wine. Its class is clear, and it doesn't need to shout about it with ambitious posturing or fancy winemaking. It is pure and simple fruit finesse. Sitting delicately on the palate, it is all about elegance and simply being. I would give it a higher mark, but it doesn’t have the length it needs, but then I don't think the Foreaus much care about ratings." —Rebecca Gibb MW

"Tastes like autumn, with crushed apple and spices on a juicy, fresh frame. Open and fluid in feel, offering white mocha and blanched almond, plus hints of toasted hazelnut, all nicely offset by a blast of green freshness. Wet stone details form a firming backbone through the long, well-meshed, clean finish. Drink now through 2030."

More about Domaine du Clos Naudin (Foreau)

We love discovering and drinking what's new and edgy in the world of wine, but sometimes, the true classics just hit right. Domaine Foreau, in Vouvray, is one of the legendary estates of France for a reason. For over a century, they’ve been crafting some of the most delicious, unique, and age-worthy white wines anywhere in the world.

Philippe Foreau’s grandfather purchased the property, known as Domaine du Clos Naudin, in 1923, and began hand-carving the cellar directly into the soft limestone hillside. Today, third-generation vigneron Philippe works alongside his son Vincent, honoring family tradition through meticulous work in the vines, extreme selection at harvest, native fermentations, aging in decades-old neutral barrels, and no malolactic fermentation (naturally blocked by the dip in temperature as winter sets in). Wines are bottled in the spring after the vintage and held back until deemed ready for release.

The Foreau vineyards span some of Vouvray’s most important terroirs. Les Perruches is loaded with flint and limestone, giving wines of precision and drive, while Les Ruettes boasts a bit more clay over limestone bedrock, imparting richness and depth. Unlike many of their neighbors, the Foreaus don’t focus on single-vineyard bottlings; instead they blend these terroirs into wines of perfect balance, with plenty of ripe golden fruit and savory mineral texture.
