Domaine Francois Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2023 [NET]

This comes from what we'd argue is the greatest premier cru in Chablis. Montée de Tonnerre's slopes face south and southwest over shallow Kimmeridgian limestone threaded with veins of blue clay, and its elevation gives the wine the iodine-like minerality and balance that make it famous. The 2023 comes from two lieux-dits within the vineyard, about two-thirds Chapelot and the rest Pied d'Aloup. It was a warmer year, but this bottling still has impressive texture and serious structure, and it will easily reward 15 years or more in the cellar. The house story is a family one: François Raveneau founded the domaine in 1948 by combining his own parcels with those of his wife's family. His sons Jean-Marie and Bernard now carry it on, still farming traditionally and still making only a small amount of wine each year.

"The 2023 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has the most stony nose of Raveneau's Premier Crus. It shows sea cave and oyster shell notes, with very fine delineation. The palate is well balanced with orange pith and a touch of grapefruit. Fine depth, a little waxy in texture, building nicely towards a leesy finish. There's a completeness here that I admire, what you might describe as a sterling Montée de Tonnerre." —Neal Martin

"One of the calling cards of the estate and the largest cuvée by volume, Raveneau’s 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is composed of two-thirds lieu-dit Chapelot and one-third lieu-dit Pied d’Aloup, uniting the broader, more textural personality of the former with the taut, mineral profile of the latter. Soaring from the glass with a bouquet of white flowers, orange zest, pear and crisp stone fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample yet tensile and racy, concluding with a long, expansive finish. When it comes to Forêt, I tend to prefer Dauvissat’s interpretation, but it’s difficult to find a finer Montée de Tonnerre than the one produced by Raveneau." —Kristaps Karklins

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters or a plateau de fruits de mer; Dover sole meunière; butter-poached lobster with beurre blanc; seared scallops with brown butter; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Montée de Tonnerre profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers over a saline, iodine-like, chalky minerality. Raveneau's barrel fermentation and long lees contact typically add texture and a subtle nutty depth without obvious oak. Look for a medium body, taut acidity and a long, dry, stony finish, in a wine built to age.
