Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson Bourgogne Blanc 2023

$3399

An organic, biodynamically farmed white Burgundy from Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson, a family that has worked the vines around Saint-Romain since 1758 and went organic back in 2009. This Bourgogne Blanc is a smart blend, young Saint-Romain vines for stony backbone, high-altitude Chardonnay for bright acidity, and riper Maconnais fruit for generosity, aged a year in used barrels without racking. The result is a fleshy yet fresh, terroir-driven Chardonnay that punches above its village-and-region billing. A reliable, honest white Burgundy for the everyday table.

"The 2023 Bourgogne Blanc was bottled just before the harvest. Its bouquet features citrus lemon and lime notes and is far more straightforward than the Aligoté. The palate is balanced with a keen line of acidity, though overall, I find a little more personality on the Aligoté this year." —Neal Martin

"Incorporating fruit from young vines in Saint-Romain balanced by the generosity of fruit from the Mâconnais, the 2023 Bourgogne Blanc (Maison) offers up notes of fresh hazelnut, lemon zest and pear. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, inviting and vibrant, with an expressive personality and a saline finish. This is already showing beautifully." —Kristaps Karklins

More about Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson

The Buisson family has been in the quiet Burgundian village of Saint-Romain for about 1000 years now. Today you can find their wines in some of the hippest natural wine bars in Paris, Lyon and beyond. That’s a pretty cool story already, but what happened in between?

For much of that history the Buissons were farmers, selling their harvests to merchants and negociants. In 1947 Henri and Marguerite began bottling and labeling their wine and the estate was officially born. Their son Gilles and his wife Monica took over a few decades later and now it is their sons, Franck and Frédérick who are in charge.

The Buissons began farming their vineyards organically back in the 1970s, and indeed “returned to organics” is more apt as this would have been the norm for much of their pre 19th century history. Their entire estate of 19 hectares was officially certified organic in 2009. In the cellar they have always been classic transmitters of terroir, working in a minimalist way with native yeasts and mostly older barrels.

The Brothers Buisson spent time, as you do when young, travelling and also attending schools and they soon fell in love with all things natural wine. They also realized that they’re family had been producing wines that were basically natural all along. Other than reducing the SO2 (in some cases to zero) there was nothing more to do other than get the bottles in front of the right bars and restaurants and presto: very, very old school Burgundy is hip, natural, fresh and fun!

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Complex yet friendly, Buisson’s Bourgogne Blanc comes from several sources: young vines in Saint-Romain from plantings on the valley’s northern side; high-altitude Bourgogne-designated Chardonnay from just outside the appellation; and purchased fruit from their friends at the esteemed Domaine Guillot-Broux in the Maconnais, who have practiced organic viticulture since 1954 and became certified in recent years. Aged for one year without racking in used 228-liter barrels, it combines a lacy white-flower aromatic overlay with dense, ripe, salty fruit; the bright acidity of the high-altitude Bourgogne nicely offsets the luscious generosity of the Maconnais-sourced fruit, and the young Saint-Romain provides a stony anchor.
