Domaine Michel Niellon Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 [NET]

$79999

Chevalier-Montrachet from Michel Niellon is one of Burgundy's true unicorns. The Chassagne-based domaine farms only a sliver of this hallowed Grand Cru, and bottles are counted in the handful each year. The 2020 is a warm-vintage Chevalier with serious concentration, fermented in barrel with measured new oak and raised on its lees in classical Niellon style: precise, restrained, never showy. Confit citrus, pear, hazelnut and white flowers fold into a saline, mineral finish that just keeps going. A wine to cellar deep into the next decade.

"An overtly floral-suffused nose speaks of the ripe essence of white peach, passion fruit, anise, exotic Asian-style tea and in particularly jasmine, tangerine rind and a hint of wood influence. There is exceptionally good density to the palate staining big-bodied flavors that exhibit impressive power on the muscular and overtly mineral-driven finale which offers massive length on the ever-so-slightly warm finale. This very serious effort is a classic Chevalier of class and grace and it's also a wine that I could still taste 24 hours later. It will be hard to find but worth it as this is one of the wines of the vintage. In a word, brilliant."

"The 2020 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, pear, freshly baked bread, hazelnuts, pastry cream and white flowers. Full-bodied, ample and seamless, it's layered and concentrated, with lively acids and a long, saline finish." —William Kelley

"This is always among my favourite Chevaliers, with its super-concentrated style. The aromas tend more toward fresh apricot than apple, with ample shading of saline mineral notes, floral aromas, a bit of spice (from the 40% new casks used for maturation), and a touch of cream and butter. The texture is powerful, dense and long. Not to be missed!"
